Improving Academic Writing for English Learners: Innovative Approaches in Higher Education

This study examines the academic writing problems of university-level English language learners and examines the effectiveness of new pedagogical methods for solving these problems. A quantitative survey design was adopted, using a structured questionnaire that was given to 376 students of different academic disciplines. The instrument, which showed high reliability (Cronbach's Alpha > 0.87 for all constructs), collected data in relation to perceptions of difficulties associated with writing, the use of innovative approaches, their perceived efficacy, and attitudes to future implementation. Our research has shown that learners experienced significant and persistent challenges in grammar, cohesion and coherence, vocabulary and self-efficacy. However, this data also reflects a high rate of adoption and a very positive perception of the technology-based tools, especially AI-based applications such as Grammarly and ChatGPT, that were found to have a significant positive impact on grammatical accuracy, academic performance, and writing confidence. Collaborative learning strategies were also considered an excellent way to learn. The findings lead to a compelling call from these students for a paradigm shift in writing instruction, wherein the innovative strategies presented here must be formally incorporated into university curricula in order to supersede the antiquated traditional forms of instruction. This research concludes with recommendations based on the evidence for teachers and institutions on how to leverage technology and collaboration pedagogy for a more supportive and effective academic writing environment.
