STUDY OF SERUM URIC ACID IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is frequently associated with metabolic comorbidities, including hyperuricemia.Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) may reflect insulin resistance and contribute to diabetic complications. Objectives:To evaluate SUA levels in T2DM patients and analyze associations with glycemic control and microvascular complications. Methods:A cross-sectional study of 141 T2DM patients was conducted.Clinical data and lab parameters including HbA1c, fasting glucose, creatinine, and SUA were recorded. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA >7.0 mg/dL (men) or >6.0 mg/dL (women).Patients with confounding conditions were excluded. Results:Hyperuricemia was found in 28.4% of patients. SUA correlated significantly with HbA1c and fasting glucose. Patients with hyperuricemia had higher HbA1c and more microvascular complications. Conclusion: Elevated SUA is common in T2DM and is associated with poor glycemic control and complications. SUA may be a useful metabolic risk marker.
