Conserving and preserving gold embossed art techniques in Jodhpur: Identifying challenges and developing best practices
Gold embossed art is a distinctive traditional craft of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, celebrated for its luxurious detailing and deep cultural significance. Rooted in the city’s royal and religious heritage, the art form is executed using real gold leaf on surfaces such as wood, leather, and handmade paper. This study explores the urgent need for conserving and preserving gold embossed art techniques amidst growing challenges such as declining artisan participation, economic instability, scarcity of traditional materials, and lack of formal documentation. It examines how modernization, industrialization, and environmental concerns are contributing to the gradual disappearance of this intricate craft. The paper identifies key challenges and proposes best practices focused on sustainable material use, comprehensive documentation, training programs for youth, integration of technology, and collaborative frameworks involving artisans, NGOs, and government institutions. It also emphasizes the importance of policy-level support and ethical trade practices to enhance the livelihoods of artisans and promote long-term sustainability. By combining traditional knowledge with innovative strategies and institutional backing, this research aims to support the revival and safeguarding of gold embossed art in Jodhpur, ensuring its continued relevance in the modern cultural landscape. This study contributes to the broader discourse on intangible heritage conservation and artisan empowerment in India.
