Overview programs for care management of patients after percutaneous coronary intervention

Objective: To review systematically current interventional studies related to knowledge, treatment adherence and quality of life of patients after percutaneous coronary intervention, as the basic for developing the program of management and care for patients after percutaneous coronary intervention at Hanoi Heart Hospital. Methods: A systematic review from Pubmed, Google scholar, Science Direct, Corchane library, European and American Society of Cardiology databases related to interventional studies affecting knowledge, treatment adherence and quality of life in patients with coronary artery disease after percutaneous coronary intervention in the last 10 years. Titles and topics include ‘percutaneous coronary intervention’, ‘management and nursing care’, ‘cardiovascular rehabilitation’, ‘knowledge of coronary artery disease’, ‘treatment adherence’, ‘quality of life’. Results: Of the 44 relevant papers, 17 studies met all the criteria, 27 studies were excluded. Interventions varied in interventional duration, contents, methods, and measures such as personalized health education, direct (one-on-one) counseling during hospitalization, at the time of discharge; group counseling or indirect counseling via text messages, medication reminders, follow-up appointments via automatic text messages, telephone; long-term management and care support with documents with images, instructional videos, electronic health monitoring handbooks, etc. showed good practice results for patients. Conclusion: The interventional progams impacted on the particpants’ knowledge and treatment adherence. The result of systematic review also showed that a program for care management of patients after PCI needs to be multi-faceted, combined education and supportive measures to help patients move from passive care to active self-care to bring long-term effectiveness to patients.
