Assessment of peripheral phlebitis at intravenous cannulation sites at hanoi heart hospital in 2023
Background: In order to provide additional information about the current status of peripheral vein phlebitis to implement improvements and enhance the quality of care aimed at patient satisfaction at the Hanoi Heart Hospital, we conducted a study with the goal of describing the prevalence of peripheral vein phlebitis and exploring the factors related to phlebitis at the catheter insertion site in patients receiving treatment at the hospital. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive prospective study was conducted on hospitalized patients at Hanoi Heart Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 20.0 software. Results: A total of 430 patients with 650 peripheral intravenous catheters were monitored and assessed by using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) score. There are 192 (29.5%) peripheral intravenous catheters developed phlebitis, with the most common grades are recorded at grade 1 (18.4%) and grade 2 (11.1%). No cases of grade 3, 4, or 5 phlebitis were found. Several factors were associated with an increased risk of phlebitis, including advanced age (≥ 60 years), underlying chronic diseases, body type (overweight or underweight), catheter dwell time of the period from 48 to 72 hours, and the use of antibiotics. The risk of developing phlebitis was 2.53 times higher for catheters inserted at the antecubital fossa compared to other insertion sites.
