Advancing Food Policy and Food in the UK: Shaping Nutrition, Safety and Sustainability for a Resilient Food System
Abstract Food policy is a broad discipline encompassing many factors that define and control food systems, which serve the food needs of citizens and the cohesion of society. A stable, sustainable and resilient food supply is essential to societal and economic stability, with food policy as a feature of state governance standing to help achieve such fulfilment. Food scientists and nutritionists, as food industry professionals engaged in food production and sale, ought then to understand what food policy is and how food policies are formulated to the benefit of the economy and society. This case study examines food policy as a feature of national governmental responsibility, using recent examples from the UK, with transferable relevance to matters of local and regional food policy.
