Features of peroxide-antioxidant imbalance in patients with rosacea and approaches to comprehensive therapy

Background. Rosacea is induced after repeated exposure to triggering, damaging factors. A comprehensive approach that includes an antioxidant can improve the quality of life of patients with rosacea. Objective. To study the indicators of peroxide-antioxidant body’s state and the efficacy of comprehensive therapy with inclusion of ethylmethylhydroxypyridine malate (EMHPM) in patients with rosacea. Material and methods. Patients with papulopustular rosacea (n=38) were distributed as follows: 19 were treated with baseline therapy and 19 additionally received EMHPM at a dose of 100 mg three times a day during the month. Patients with rosacea underwent a blood serum sampling with determination of parameters of ceruloplasmin, glutathione peroxidase in erythrocytes, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, malonyldialdehyde, as well as the dynamics of indicators on the scales of diagnostic assessment of rosacea, global evaluation of researcher’s effectiveness, dermatological life quality index was analyzed. Results. In the study of oxidative stress state and antioxidant protection in patients with rosacea, it has been revealed that the concentration of superoxide dismutase was statistically significantly reduced (p<0.001) in presence of an increase in the malonyldialdehyde (p<0.001) in moderate severity. The course of therapy with EMHPM has contributed to a significant decrease in glutathione peroxidase level in erythrocytes by 39.95% (p<0.001). Conclusion. It has been found that the inclusion of EMHPM in comprehensive therapy for patients with rosacea contributed to normalization of indicators of lipid peroxidation, ceruloplasmin, superoxide dismutase compared to healthy individuals (p<0.001), decrease in the value on the scale of rosacea diagnostic assessment by 2.6 times and dermatological life quality index by 3.8 times.
