Reproduções sonoras da Lisboa oitocentista em O primo Basílio, de Eça de Queirós
The main aim of this article is to investigate the presence of music in O primo Basílio (1878), by Eça de Queirós, analyzing it as a fundamental element of the narrative. The objective of the study is to elucidate that the musical references present in Queirós’ novel are not limited to merely descriptive or ornamental functions but play a crucial role in the construction of the plot and the complexity of the characters. The various mentions of music, whether through arias, operas, fado or other components, are incorporated in the novel in a way that reflects the characters' desires, provides false clues to the reader about future events in the story or portrays the culture of 19th-century European bourgeoisie. Therefore, analyzing how Eça intertwined music with literature is important to detail aspects of the author's writing and also weave interdisciplinary and cultural relationships.
