Broadband Colorful Emission from Zero-Dimensional Copper-Based Halides Hybridized by Dibenzyldimethylamine

Low-dimensional metal halides (LDMHs) containing lead have shown great potential in the field of luminescence due to their excellent optical properties and good processability. But their toxicity constrains their development. Moreover, achieving colorful luminescence usually requires different organic ligands or metal ions. Herein, by using large volume dibenzyldimethylamine as the organic ligand, two zero-dimensional Cu-based LDMHs have been synthesized: (C16H20N)2Cu2Br4 (DBBC-B) and (C16H20N)2(C2H3N)2Cu5Br7 (DBBC-O). DBBC-B exhibits broadband sky-blue emission at 476 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 92%, while DBBC-O displays wide orange-yellow light emission centered at 647 nm with 83% PLQY. The high-energy emission of DBBC-B comes from the self-trapped excitons, while the low-energy emission of DBBC-O mainly derives from the excited states formed by the cluster center (3CC). When DBBC-B and DBBC-O are applied in white light-emitting diodes, the device exhibits high-quality white electroluminescence with a very high CRI of 95.
