Study of high-momentum muon beam imaging at EMuS

Abstract Benefiting from its strong penetrating power, imaging with cosmic-ray muons is currently a unique way to see through large objects. However, muon imaging using beams generated from accelerator-based muon sources which has been seldomly studied can provide much higher intensity and monochromatic energy than cosmic-ray muons. The Experimental Muon Source (EMuS) is a proposed muon source at China Spallation Neutron Source. It is designed to deliver a muon beam with an unprecedently high momentum of 450 MeV/c for high-momentum muon beam imaging. This article presents the simulation studies of transmission and absorption imaging, scattering imaging, and computer-assisted tomography, based on the high-momentum muon beam of the EMuS. We assess the feasibility of these methods on EMuS and analyze the imaging results. Although the study is based on the EMuS beamlines, it provides valuable insights for researchers interested in high-momentum muon beam imaging.
