Unipolar Pulse Generator With Adjustable Polarity Based on Buck Boost Converter
This article presents a novel topology for generating high-voltage pulses for electroporation applications, utilizing a modified buck–boost converter operated in continuous conduction mode. This approach enables the generation of unipolar (positive/negative) high-voltage pulses using a single dc source, eliminating the need for H-bridges on the source or load side. The proposed topology reduces the number of components, creating a compact structure with improved reliability, cost-effectiveness, and minimal power losses compared to traditional designs such as Marx generators or pulse forming networks (PFNs). The proposed structure has been validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, showcasing its ability to generate high-voltage pulses with a pulsewidth range of 100–1000 ns, an adjustable amplitude from ±0.4 to ±2 kV, and a repetition frequency up to 500 kHz. The simulation results confirm the proposed topology’s effectiveness, establishing it as a competitive solution for electroporation applications demanding precise and reliable high-voltage pulse generation. An experimental model on the laboratory level has been implemented to prove the viability of the proposed concept.
