Perceptions and Implementation Challenges of the e-School Program for Student-Athletes

Objectives This study aims to explore the perceptions and implementation challenges associated with the reintroduction of the basic academic competency support program (e-school) for student-athletes in Korea. Methods A total of 15 participants including student-athletes, parents, and coaches were recruited for in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach to identify key themes related to the participants’ experiences and interpretations of the program. Results & Conclusions Participants perceived the previous program as ineffective, highlighting issues such as "proxy attendance," "role conflict," and "uninvolved learning assistants." Although the right to education was acknowledged, concerns were raised about the program’s lack of engagement, efficiency, and time suitability. Improvement suggestions included vocationally oriented systems, personalized assessments, and independent oversight. To ensure effective reimplementation, the program must provide tailored content, foster intrinsic motivation, and be supported by a robust institutional monitoring framework.
