Dynamic control of membrane potential lies at the heart of a wide spectrum of biological processes and plays a critical role in the control of blood flow by brain capillaries. This process involves the coordination of electrical signals in all vascular cell types (smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells and pericytes) to control energy delivery according to local needs across spatiotemporal scales and throughout all brain regions.I will present our recent and emerging findings on how electrical signaling from the brain capillaries emerges and is controlled, which provides a framework for understanding the rapid and dynamic regulation of brain blood flow to meet the moment-to-moment energetic demands of neural tissue.
