Understanding the Impact of Cyberloafing in the Context of Technology-Driven Enterprises : A Case Study of the Banking Sector

Purpose : The development of Industry 4.0 has transformed every organization into a technology-driven enterprise. The pervasive use of technology and information tools in organizations has resulted in what is known as “cyberloafing.” On the other hand, the financial industry was entirely dependent on information and communication technology. Therefore, the likelihood of bank employees engaging in cyberloafing was very prevalent. Methodology : Most studies have recently focused on the causes of cyberloafing, but only a few have examined its effects. Therefore, in this study, the effects of cyberloafing among bank employees in India were assessed using a cross-sectional survey design grounded in the “conservation of resources (COR)” framework. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS. Findings : According to the study findings, cyberloafing significantly impacted employee well-being, innovative work culture, and job anxiety. Further, using multi-group analysis (MGA), the study also investigated the moderating effect of various socio-demographic variables (such as gender, age (GenX or GenY), and sector (private or public)) on the relation between cyberloafing and its consequences. The findings revealed that the employee's age significantly moderated the relationship between cyberloafing and its outcomes. Practical Implications : The findings provided valuable insights and suggestions for all stakeholders to manage cyberloafing at the bank and improve employee well-being, innovative work behavior, job performance, and anxiety. Originality : This study is among the first to examine the consequences of cyberloafing on bank employees in India.
