PomEEGo: An EEG-Based Monitoring and Analytics System To Reduce Physician Burnout and Enhance Patient Safety
Medical errors are a significant concern in healthcare settings, which has the potential to lead to extremely serious consequences for patients. One cause of medical error that severely impacts patient safety and clinical outcomes is physician cognitive burnout. While preventable, prior studies have shown that a majority of physicians in the United States experience burnout and that the odds of medical error are doubled when fatigue is present. This poster paper details the development of PomEEGo, a real-time monitoring system that leverages low-cost consumer-grade electroencephalography (EEG) technology to detect physician fatigue and assist with focus and relaxation management through neurofeedback. A cross-platform mobile application was developed using the Flutter framework to collect and analyze data from an EEG headset to provide notification and feedback functionality. In addition, a web-based tool was developed for hospital departments and administrators to make data-driven decisions through visualization and analytics of the collected data. Despite hurdles faced, the successful development of PomEEGo demonstrates the potential of cost-effective EEG-based technology in healthcare settings to assist in reducing medical errors and improving patient care.
