The Impact of Digital Technology on the Forms of Contemporary Moroccan Ceramics

This research explores how digital technology has reshaped Moroccan ceramics today, focusing on the interplay between tradition and innovation in this evolution. Known for their ornate patterns and artisan craftsmanship, Moroccan ceramics today incorporate digital tools, including CAD software, computational design and 3-D printing. While this integration has cascaded considerable opportunities and challenges in the ceramic design process, material exploration and manufacturing methods. Through detailed analysis, conventional Moroccan ceramic motifs were digitally recorded and then reconstructed as high-fidelity 3D models. These models were also useful in allowing experimentation with shapes and designs that would not have been previously covered by conventional methods. With advanced 3D printing technologies, prototypes have been produced, which helps in the precision of the design and the efficiency of the production. Comparative evaluations confirmed that formatted ceramics achieved high aesthetic fidelity to their traditional counterparts however the subtle nuances of handicraft remained a challenge to replicate. Assessing the Quality of Materials of Digital Ceramics The study found that while the functional properties of digitally produced ceramics were broadly comparable to those of conventional ceramics, mechanical strength needed to be improved for certain applications. In addition, digital production significantly accelerated and lowered the expenses of conventional ceramic production, especially well-suited for high-volume productions. But some artisanal businesses were finding it difficult to put investment in digital technology together.
