Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation of the Effects of Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Treatment Outcomes After Surgical Removal of Impacted Mandibular Third Molar
Introduction: Third molar surgical extraction can lead to several complications likepain and edema. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) promotes healing, tissue regeneration, andbone growth, offering a cost-effective, biocompatible solution for improved recovery indental surgeries. Aim: To assess the effect of platelet-rich fibrin on postoperative clinicaloutcomes and radiographic findings after surgical extraction of impacted Mandibularthird molar. Materials and Methods: The present study involved 20 individuals withbilaterally impacted mandibular third molar, aged from 20 to 40 years. The patients weredivided into two groups utilizing the split-mouth technique: Group I (Control Group):Included 20 impacted mandibular third molar which were removed, and the extractionsockets were left empty, then the socket was sutured. Group II (Study Group): Included20 impacted mandibular third molars that were extracted, and the dental sockets werefilled with PRF followed by suturing of the sockets. Results: Clinical findings showedsignificantly lower edema and pain levels in the study group compared to the controlgroup, with no significant difference in maximal mouth opening. Radiographically, bone density increased in both groups over time. Although no significantdifference was found at one month between both groups, the study group showedsignificantly higher bone socket density levels than the control group at four months. Conclusion: Application of PRF following the surgical removal of impacted thirdmolars reduces clinical post-surgical complications as discomfort and edema, inaddition, it improves healing and increases bone density of the dental socket.
