Relationship between Locus of Control, Metacognitive Awareness and Academic Performance among Alexandria faculty of Nursing Students.

Background Locus of control and metacognition awareness play important roles inimproving students' performance and academic achievement, as well as increasing thequality of care. Objective: To identify the relationship between locus of control, metacognitive awareness, and academic performance among Alexandria faculty ofNursing Students. Setting: The study was conducted in all nine scientific nursingdepartments. at the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University. Subjects: Theparticipants of this study consisted of 400 nursing students. These students wereselected through a random and representative sampling method. Tools: Threetools were used. Academic Locus of Control Scale & Metacognitive AwarenessInventory Scale & Students' Academic Performance Questionnaire. Results: The studyshowed that the majority of the students (83.25%) had a high internal locus of control, while only 2.5% had a high external locus of control. Moreover, nearly three-quarters(70.25%) of the students had a high level of metacognitive awareness, while slightlyless than one-third (29.75%) of them had an average metacognitive awareness level.Additionally, slightly less than half (47.5%) of the students had a good academicperformance. a positive, significant correlation was found between the students’academic locus of control and the dimensions of metacognitive awareness (p <0.001*) and the overall metacognitive awareness (p < 0.001*). Also, a positive, significant correlation was found between the students’ academic locus of control andtheir academic performance (p < 0.001*). Conclusion: Based on the findings of thepresent study, it can be concluded that the majority of nursing students had a highlevel of internal locus of control and metacognitive awareness; additionally, asubstantial proportion of them had excellent and good academic performance. Also, astrong relationship was found between locus of control, metacognitive awareness, andacademic performance among faculty of nursing students. Recommendations: Theeducator should assist the students in developing an internal locus of control toimprove their academic performance and minimize the level of failure inexaminations. Also, the educator should be trained to pose classroom questions toincrease students’ metacognitive awareness and achievement.
