The Role of Nutrition in Cognitive Development in Primary Schools of Punjab Pakistan

Background: Adequate nutrition is essential for children’s physical growth, cognitive development, and academic performance. However, many students neglect healthy eating, which can result in long-term health risks such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Nutritional deficiencies also lead to short-term problems, such as fatigue, tooth decay, and digestive issues, which can hinder learning and participation in school. Objective: This study aimed to examine the impact of nutrition on students’ health and cognitive development in Tehsil Jhumra, Faisalabad. The specific objectives were to identify health problems caused by poor nutrition, assess the issues related to unhealthy diets, and explore the relationship between healthy nutrition and students’ academic progress. Methods: A descriptive survey design was employed. The study population included 271 teachers from 54 government primary schools. Using simple random sampling, a sample of 114 teachers was selected with a 95% confidence level and 7% confidence interval. Data were collected from 25 schools using a well-structured online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and weighted scores. Results: Most respondents were master’s qualified (79.3%) and aged between 31–40 years (50%). Teachers reported that poor nutrition frequently caused health issues, with tooth decay and digestive problems ranked highest. In contrast, healthy diets were strongly associated with a better immune system and improved mental state, which positively influenced students’ concentration and academic performance. Conclusion: The study concludes that inadequate nutrition has a detrimental impact on both health and learning outcomes. Promoting balanced dietary practices and nutrition education in schools is essential to enhancing students’ cognitive abilities and academic success.
