Epidural steroid injection for the treatment of refractory sacroiliac region pain in horses
sacroiliac pain 57% (37/65), front feet pain 23% (15/65), impinging dorsal spinous processes 19% (12/65), gastric ulcers 17% (11/65) and caudal cervical joint osteoarthritis 10.8% (7/65).Treatment undertaken in juveniles was predominantly surgical: 84% bilateral subtarsal neurectomy and fasciotomy, 11% no treatment performed, and 5% received medication and extracorporeal shockwave therapy.Main limitations: Age at time of examination may not necessarily correlate with onset of clinical signs. Conclusions: PSD is commonly thought of as a repetitive strain injury in mature horses. However, we confirm that PSD can cause PP/lameness in young horses that might otherwise be thought to have developmental orthopaedic conditions due to no history of intense exercise.Concurrent disorders were frequently present and the hypothesis is supported.
