Dry Reforming of Propane over PtNi Bimetallic Catalysts to Produce Syngas

Abstract Dry reforming of methane (DRM) for syngas production faces significant limitations, including high reaction temperatures and low thermodynamic equilibrium conversion of CO 2 . In contrast, dry reforming of propane (DRP)—the reaction between C 3 H 8 and CO 2 —theoretically achieves higher equilibrium conversion. However, DRP typically exhibits high selectivity toward C 3 H 6 , which impedes syngas yield. While certain CeO 2 ‐supported metal catalysts demonstrate high DRP activity, but their durability is frequently limited by metal sintering (e.g., Pt) or carbon deposition (e.g., Ni). In this study, the DRP durability was significantly enhanced by preparing PtNi alloy catalysts with controlled Pt/Ni loadings. Experimental and computational results reveal that the PtNi alloy facilitates excellent CO 2 dissociation, whereas Pt surfaces promote C 3 H 8 decomposition. This work advances the theoretical understanding of alkane dry reforming and informs the rational design of robust catalysts.
