Contribution of an avocado innovation platform to knowledge and skills in Gisagara District, Rwanda
The avocado fruit has an essential role in human health, due to its nutritional value. Despite the importance of the avocado crop in Rwanda, there is still inadequate avocado yield that can fetch good prices in the local and international markets. Moreover, there is little knowledge among farmers on avocado quality and varieties. To address those challenges the avocado innovation platform (AIP) was established to build the capacity of farmers in avocado production and marketing. This study set out to assess the contribution of the established AIP on knowledge and skills in Gisagara District, Rwanda. The study employed survey research designs. Data was gathered from 40 members of AIP farmers and 25 other stakeholders that include extension staff, inputs supplies, exporters, researchers and processors using a questionnaire schedule. Data was analyzed using percentages, Likert scale ratings, t-test, and chi-square with SPSS software. The level of knowledge and skills acquired by the AIP participants during the process of capacity building was higher (M = 4.27, SD = 0.59) when compared to the level than when they started the AIP process (M = 2.29, SD = 0.68). A paired sample test shows that the level of knowledge and skills acquired by the participants during the AIP process was found to be significantly higher statistically (t = –13.57, df = 64, p < 0.001). The study shows that the established AIP has greatly facilitated access to quality avocado seedlings and market access for its members. Therefore, it is worthwhile to recommend the continuity of the established of AIP in Gisagara District.
