Medium Output Voltage Push-Pull Converter for Electric Vehicle Charging Applications

This paper describes the operation of medium output voltage push-pull converter for electric vehicle charging applications. The isolated nature of push-pull converter is preferred for battery charging applications. It comprises of two stages; the first stage consists of a pulse width modulation (PWM) boost rectifier to increase the voltage and also for power factor correction (PFC). The second stage consists of an isolated push- pull converter which regulates the power supplied for charging the battery. The PWM boost rectifier is controlled by hysteresis current controller (HCC) and the push-pull converter is controlled by a proportional integral (PI) controller to maintain a constant output voltage. The proposed two stage converter is modeled and then simulated using Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results demonstrate that the HCC maintains the unity power factor (UPF) at the input terminals with tolerable harmonic distortion.
