Inorganic SrMo1–<i>x</i>Ni<i>x</i>O3–δ Perovskite Nanocrystals for Catalytic Reductive Etherification of Biobased Compounds
In this paper, we report on the influence of oxygen vacancies on the reductive etherification of aldehydes in the presence of multicationic inorganic SrMo1-<i>x</i> Ni <i>x</i> O3-δ perovskites. The oxygen vacancies were induced by manipulating the ABO3 structure of the perovskite by incorporating two different metal cations at the B-site. The prepared perovskites were found to possess a low surface area; however, XPS revealed the presence of oxygen vacancies in all perovskites because of structural defects. These perovskites were all active as catalysts in the reductive etherification reaction. The inorganic perovskites, SrMoO3, SrMo0.5Ni0.5O3-δ, and SrNiO3, were found to be the best performing catalysts because they possess the highest amount of oxygen vacancies. All of the prepared perovskites were 100% selective for the desired ether product. Although it is very active in the reductive etherification of aldehydes with primary alcohols, the perovskite catalyst did not facilitate the conversion of other carbonyl-containing molecules and the secondary alcohols.
