Study on Triggering Method of Battery Thermal Runaway with Different Heating Area and Heating Power
The mainstream methods for triggering battery thermal runaway in the industry mainly include heating, penetration, and overcharging. Among them, the use of the heating method is widespread due to the advantages of high trigger probability, strong universality, and small modification of the battery pack etc. Regarding this method, one of the current contentions focuses on the selection of heating area and heating power. Based on the verified battery thermal runaway model, this paper systematically compares the effects of the changes of heating area and heating power on the characteristics of battery thermal runaway. The results indicate that, given a fixed heating power, an increase in heating area correlates with a decrease in the internal temperature gradient within the cell. The heating time and the introduced heat required for triggering battery thermal runaway are increased, but the increase range is not obvious. When the heating area is certain, the temperature gradient inside the cell increases with the increase of heating power. The heating time required for contact heating out of control decreases, but the introduced external heat increases significantly.
