In-situ synthesized TiC particles reinforced TiNiCu matrix composite filler for brazing graphite and tungsten

The TiC particle-reinforced TiNiCu composite filler was prepared and used to achieve the brazing of graphite and tungsten in this work. TiC particles were synthesized in situ during arc-melting through the reaction of GNPs and Ti, which were uniformly distributed in the TiNiCu filler matrix composited of Ti 2 (Ni, Cu) and Ti(Ni, Cu). The proportion of TiC particles, which increased with the content of GNPs, hindered the wetting and spreading of the composite filler on the graphite surface but improving the mechanical properties of the graphite/tungsten brazed joint. The maximum shear strength of the graphite/tungsten joint brazed using composite filler with 3 wt% TiC particles contained was 33.57 MPa, which was 49.2 % higher than that of the joint without TiC particles. The introduction of in-situ reinforcements by vacuum arc-melting provides a new technical support for brazing graphite and tungsten, a materials system with significant differences.
