A strategy to synergistically enhance the interfacial bonding quality and strength-ductility of laminated aluminum alloy

Laminated aluminum alloys demonstrate considerable application potential, but their advancement is substantially limited by inadequate interfacial strength and the inherent strength-ductility trade-off. This work achieves a simultaneous enhancement of interfacial bonding strength, tensile strength, and ductility in 7B52 laminated aluminum alloys through single-pass large-reduction rolling online quenching, thereby offering an innovative strategy for producing high-performance laminated aluminum alloys. Comparative analysis reveals that online quenching with large-reduction deformation induces more substantial interfacial deformation than conventional offline quenching. This process effectively increases interface waviness and fractures interfacial oxides, leading to superior interfacial bonding quality. Furthermore, the online quenching process also produces notable grain refinement in pure aluminum (Al) by more than 85.8 %, effectively reducing the strength difference between the materials on both sides of the interface, thereby significantly improving interfacial deformation compatibility. Additionally, the process retains high-density dislocations generated during deformation and optimizes interlayer precipitation characteristics, collectively enabling synergistic strength-ductility improvement. Increasing the online quenching temperature would enhances solid solution effects, resulting in additional precipitation strengthening benefits. Implemented at 520 °C, this rolling online quenching process boosts the yield strength (YS), tensile strength (UTS), and elongation (EL) of 7B52 laminated aluminum alloy by over 14.5 % compared to conventional offline quenching, while simultaneously achieving an interfacial bonding strength of 68.1 MPa.
