An Evaluation of the Performance of Students in Science Subjects Gombe State Nigeria

This paper seeks to evaluate the performance of students in science subjects in Gombe State, Nigeria. Data used were obtained from the Management of the schools in Gombe State. The study covered the period of 2017/2018 session. The data used are dependent variables such as the students’ scores in: Mathematics [MATH], Physics [PHYS], Biology [BIOL] and Chemistry [CHEM], and Assessment on scientific product produced in a school [ASPP]. While the independent variables are structural equipment of Science Library[SLIB], Science Laboratory[SLAB], Assessment on Science practical conducted in a month [ASPM], Assessment on Science students’ execution in a month [ASEM], Science teachers’ years of teaching experience on science[STTE], Instructional Hours spent on Science subjects per week [HSSW], Students’ teacher ratio in a class [STRC], Assessment on Science Textbooks [ASTB], Hours spent in a day studying science [HSSS], Home educational aids on science [HEAS], Extra moral teachers on science [EMTS], Sex (SSEX) and Age (SAGE) of the science students. The analysis is aimed to evaluate the performance of students in science subjects by confirming the relationship between the dependent and independent variables, also to verify the significant impact of the dependent variable on one another. The statistical analyses used are the descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), canonical correlation and multiple regression analysis. The canonical correlation reported a correlation between the dependent and independent variables at the first canonical variate; a value of 0.6643 with p-value= 0.0296 < α = 0.05, while other two canonical variates are not. However, there exists correlation within the dependent variables and then multiple regression analysis is run to fit a model for each of the dependent variables on other dependent variables. The four science subjects were all correlated with one another other with relatively adjusted R squared values showing the percentage of variation displayed by the science subjects. Each subject is significantly contributing to the better understanding of its sister subject. Therefore, the Authority is advised to make all efforts to see that, there is better understand of the science subjects.
