Re-reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun: Effective Altruism of Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Ambiguity of Being Human
This paper examines the ambiguity of the boundary between humans and artificial intelligence in Klara and the Sun where the line between humans and machines is becoming increasingly blurred. Kazuo Ishiguro, the writer of the novel, emphasizes the contrast between Klara's altruism and the moral ambiguity of human behavior. She shows unwavering loyalty and altruism towards humans as an AF. In contrast, the humans around her reveal their moral vulnerabilities and shortcomings due to self-interest, fear, or social pressure. Therefore, Ishiguro also emphasizes the urgent need for a deeper understanding of the relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. As a result, this novel calls for reflection on human values, justice, and responsibility in a world increasingly occupied by artificial intelligence. (Paichai University)
