Compensation for damages is an important institution of civil law. When a specific object with personal significance such as a memorabilia or heirloom is infringed, it may cause mental damage to the owner, but this content has not been recorded in legal documents as well as trial practice in Vietnam. This article studies this issue through analyzing foreign laws, proposing experiences to Vietnam and includes the following two main contents: (i) mental damage in cases that specific objects with personal significance such as a memorabilia or heirloom are infringed; (ii) cases of compensation for mental damage when specific objects with personal significance such as a memorabilia or heirloom are infringed under the laws of some countries and recommendations for Vietnam.
