Anomalous Phonon Softening with Inherent Strain in Wrinkled Monolayer WSe 2 (Adv. Mater. 35/2025)

Novel Strain Indicator In article number 2419414, Mun Seok Jeong and co-workers identify a new strain indicator in monolayer WSe2 using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The strain sensitivity of the newly revealed Raman-inactive out-of-plane A2″(Γ) mode was clearly demonstrated through both experimental and theoretical approaches. Specifically, density functional theory (DFT)-based analysis elucidating the origin of selection rule relaxation (attributed to strain-induced polarizability changes) provides robust support for establishing this mode as a novel phonon-based strain indicator.
