Am-241 conversion coefficients from air kerma to dose equivalent

Abstract Photon fluence spectra of four Am-241 irradiators used for radiation protection meter calibrations were determined with a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector, and the conversion coefficients from air kerma to dose equivalent (CCs) were calculated from these spectra. The CCs were compared with each other and with values published in the Annex B of ISO 4037-3:2019 standard. Agreement between the CCs of the irradiators was within 0.8%, while difference to the values in the standard was mainly within 2%. The results can be used as an input for the determination of generic CCs for the update of the ISO 4037 standard. These generic CCs would enable laboratories to establish Am-241 radiation qualities for radiation protection meter calibrations without the use of spectrometry.
