Transesophageal Echocardiography Challenges in a Pediatric Case of Dextrocardia with Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect and Persistent Right-sided Superior Vena Cava
Abstract Dextrocardia is a rare cardiac positional anomaly, in which the heart is in the right hemithorax, with an incidence of 1 in 10,000 adult population. Echocardiographic evaluation proves to be a valuable tool in assessing the cardiac abnormalities associated with dextrocardia. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during the intraoperative period helps in guiding and delineating the cardiac anatomy; however, certain TEE probe manipulations and multiplane transducer angle modifications are required to obtain the recommended views. We present a case report of a 9-year-old girl with dextrocardia, situs inversus totalis with ostium secundum atrial septal defect, and persistent right-sided superior vena cava.
