Semi-Analytical Modeling of Electromagnetic Forming of Muffler Tube

Due to the inherent complexities of electromagnetic forming (EMF) such as thermoplastic effects, high strain-rate deformation, and strong electromagnetic-structural coupling, deriving a fully analytical, closed-form solution remains a significant challenge. However, in this work, a semi-analytical model is proposed based on certain practical assumptions. This model offers a simplified yet insightful overview of the EMF process, serving as a valuable tool for better understanding its intricate behavior. In EMF, a metallic workpiece is shaped by a high-intensity magnetic field generated by a coil, with energy supplied by a rapidly discharging capacitor bank. The theoretical framework for analysing this process has been divided into three stages: Electrical Analysis -calculating the coil's current and voltage resulting from the capacitor discharge; Electromagnetic Analysisevaluating the magnetic field distribution and the induced pressure acting on the workpiece; Mechanical Analysis predicting the motion and deformation of the workpiece under the generated pressure, using simplified plasticity model. This analytical model comprises temporal and spatial distributions of various electromagnetic and structural quantities. The model has been validated with existing experimental and numerical results.Variation trends are matching satisfactorily and there are maximum 3-7% deviation in the peak values of different electromagnetic and structural parameters.
