Real Time Model Predictive Control for Bidirectional EV Charging and Discharging

In this work, a single-phase rectifier with two power conversion stages AC/DC and DC/DC with Model Predictive Control (MPC) controller is shown for charging and discharging electric vehicle (EV) in different scenario to prove robustness of controller. In DC/DC conversion a voltage source with a passive filter, a buck- boost converter is used to control power flow between the grid and the inverter DC bus. Bidirectional DC-DC converters are essential for controlling power flow and facilitating effective energy transfer in EV systems. High-frequency switching, however, puts a lot of strain on the switches in terms of voltage and current, which could cause physical harm. A two-level control approach, comprising secondary control and power management, is used to overcome this. Before sending it to the secondary control, where a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) calculates the necessary current, the power management level modifies the power reference in accordance with the battery's condition. MATLAB simulations are used to validate the suggested approach, showing how well it manages bidirectional power transmission for battery charging and discharging applications.
