Design of AHB-to-Wishbone Protocol Translator with SystemVerilog Verification for SoC and ASIC
In modern System-on-Chip(SoC) design, effective integration of various bus protocols is key to building cohesive systems. The AHB to Wishbone Bridge serves as a vital link, enabling smooth communication between AMBA’s Advanced High-performance Bus (AHB) and the modular, open-source Wishbone interface. By facilitating interoperability between the two standards, it allows designers to incorporate a wide range of IP cores without significant redesign. The bridge manages protocol conversion, data buffering, and transaction handshaking to improve performance, lower latency, and minimize resource overhead. Developed in Verilog for efficient synthesis, the design’s functionality is validated using SystemVerilog with techniques such as transaction-level modeling, constrained-random stimulus, and functional coverage. A structured testbench—comprising elements like drivers, monitors, and a scoreboard—ensures correctness and compliance with protocol rules. This solution is especially valuable for FPGA and ASIC projects requiring integration of legacy or third-party Wishbone devices into AHB-based environments, offering a scalable and high-performance approach for embedded and DSP systems.
