A High-Voltage Bipolar Pulse Generator Based on a Three-level T-type Inverter

A bipolar pulse generator generates positive and negative pulses, and it is widely used in many modern applications like non-destructive testing (NDT), non-thermal plasma generation, and many other applications. This paper introduces a T-type neutral point clamped (TNPC) inverter together with a front-end boost converter in detail. The suggested pulse generator uses a small amount of DC input voltage to produce a high-value output pulse. The designed inverter can be operated in two different modes, namely, single-module operation and multi-module operation. With the help of a multi-module structure, not only high output pulses can be obtained but also shifted pulses; that is, multi-level pulses are also obtained. The building of the circuit and a thorough description of the entire mechanism have been provided. Results from MATLAB simulations and real-time hardware base examination of a scaled-down laboratory prototype are provided to confirm the generator's efficacy.
