OPTIFADE: On the Optimization of Symbol Error Probability for D2D Communications operating over Fading Channels
In scenarios considering next-generation wireless networks, Device-To-Device (D2D) communications have drawn focus as a potentially useful technology. D2D communication refers to the transfer of data directly between two devices without the need for an intermediary such as a server or central hub. However, wireless fading substantially impacts the quality and reliability of the communication link over D2D communications, resulting in several issues, viz., decreased signal quality, increased latency, reduced throughput, and coverage. In this context, Symbol Error Probability (SEP) is a crucial performance metric that quantifies the likelihood of receiving an incorrect bit at the receiver. The computation of SEP requires approximating the Gaussian Q-function, and hence, this study aims to exploit different approximation techniques for the Gaussian Q-function. Furthermore, considering Rayleigh fading channels, the closed-form solution for SEP integrals is provided over the proposed approximation.
