A Study of Corrosion Mechanism Applied to Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC)
The development of sustainable materials capable of responding to specific stimuli while retaining their original shape has been extensively explored. Among these, Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) stand out as promising sensors and actuators, primarily driven by electric energy. Despite challenges in fabrication, IPMCs offer high reliability, mechanical compatibility, rapid response times, and excellent strain rates, making them valuable alternatives. Their bio-inspired properties further enhance their requirement. These efforts have led to significant insights into factors influencing their durability and efficiency, along with advancements in processing techniques for IPMC fabrication. In this paper, the corrosion-induced degradation of IPMC is studied. It thoroughly examines corrosion mechanisms, focusing on the interaction between the polymer matrix and metal electrodes under various environmental conditions. Key factors such as ion exchange, electrochemical behavior, and the role of hydration in the degradation process are studied. Furthermore, experimental findings are analyzed to identify potential strategies for mitigating corrosion and enhancing the longevity of IPMCs.
