Collision Avoidance Strategy and Simulation for Giant Magnetostrictive Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems

In order to enhance the active safety of the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system, a giant magnetostrictive brake actuator was integrated with the AEB system to design a novel giant magnetostrictive autonomous emergency braking system. A control strategy for the AEB system based on the giant magnetostrictive brake actuator was proposed. The timing for warning, intervention braking, and the desired braking force of the AEB system were determined using three models: Time to Collision (TTC), Time to Accident (TTA), and a safety distance model (Seungwukmoon). The proposed system was validated through co-simulation using CarSim, PreScan, and Matlab/Simulink under two test scenarios: a braking preceding vehicle (CCRb) and a lane-changing preceding vehicle. The simulation results indicate that the proposed control strategy successfully avoids collisions in both scenarios, with the relative distance between the two vehicles after emergency braking ranging from 1.65 to 2.62 meters. During emergency braking, the giant magnetostrictive actuator can rapidly generate sufficient braking force as required, meeting the demands of autonomous emergency braking.
