A Review with a Novel Perspective on IoT Evolution, Technical Architecture, Applications, and Challenges-Solutions
With the rise of digitization in the 21st century, Internet of Things (IoT) technology is quickly emerging as a vital bridge connecting the physical and digital worlds. This paper provides a comprehensive review of IoT's evolution, technical architecture, and cross-domain applications while analyzing challenges and solutions. Unlike existing surveys that focus on isolated layers, this review introduces a unified maturity evaluation framework to quantify IoT adoption across industries, emphasizing cross-layer interdependencies. Applications like industrial automation and healthcare demonstrate IoT's transformative impact, reducing downtime by 40% and hospital readmissions by 25%. Challenges in scalability, privacy, and sustainability persist, demanding future research on swarm intelligence (SI), 6G-enabled tactile IoT, and green designs. This work provides actionable insights for stakeholders to navigate IoT's technical and ethical complexities.
