Intelligent Controller-Based AT-SHAF for Power Quality Enhancement in Islanded Fuel Cell system
Due to the severe global energy crisis and strained conventional power systems are driving the adoption of emission free energy sources like solar and wind to enhance interconnected system reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. While diversifying energy sources by incorporating weather-dependent renewables reduces reliance on fossil fuels, the resulting supply intermittency can be effectively mitigated by integrating fuel cells into electrical grids. The unpredictable nature of non-linear loads introduces excessive harmonic current injection, worsening power quality and consequently impacting system performance. Islanding mode operation exhibits heightened susceptibility to dynamic load variations due to limited generation capacity and low inertia, potentially leading to system instability, resource overloading, inverter degradation, and system failure. Comprehending these impacts, this study aims to analyse and quantify the effectiveness of Proportional-Integral (PI) and Fuzzy Logic Controller-based Active Tunable Shunt Hybrid Active Power Filter (AT-SHAPF) in mitigating total harmonic distortion (THD), improving current distortion factor (CDF) and thereby True Power Factor (TPF) under variable conditions. MATLAB/Simulink results indicate that FLC-based AT-SHAPF provides efficient performance under rapidly changing conditions.
