Evaluation of plastic biodegradation with three strains of Bacillus subtilis ATCC6051, Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923

The biodegradation of plastics by bacteria presents a promising and environmentally sustainable approach to addressing the accumulation of plastic waste, particularly in the case of resistant polymers like polypropylene. Although the total removal of plastic is not possible, this approach is nevertheless more effective than the traditional procedures. The aim of this study is to utilize standard strains to degrade plastics made of polypropylene, which is one of the most widely used plastics for human applications. In this study, the standard strains of Bacillus.subtilis ATCC 6051 , Bacillus.cereus ATCC 11778 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 were used for plastic degradation. The results showed that Bacillus subtilis , Bacillus cereus , and Staphylococcus aureus have the ability to degrade 31 %, 26.7 %, and 19.4 % of the plastic, respectively. These standard strains can to utilize plastic as the sole source of carbon under harsh conditions. Therefore, this method holds promise for reducing and decomposing plastic waste in the environment.
