Inherent Switching Hybrid IPT System Based on Clamp Circuit for Battery Charging

ABSTRACT Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems are highly suitable for battery charging due to their safety and convenience. Battery charging applications require constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) outputs for efficient and stable charging to enhance battery performance and lifespan. However, existing methods for achieving CC and CV outputs have issues like complex control, numerous compensation components, and excessive cross coupling effects. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a receiving side clamped IPT charging system that inherently realizes CC‐to‐CV mode transitions through parametric optimization, eliminating the need for auxiliary DC‐DC converters or complex control algorithms. The system employs an inductor‐capacitor‐capacitor (LCC) compensation topology on the transmitting side; the clamping circuit and the receiving side circuit adopt the series‐capacitor compensation topology, with its inherent decoupling mechanism enabled by orthogonal Q‐type and solenoid coils arranged spatially. This innovative magnetic coupling structure design not only realizes inductor reuse to minimize component count but also suppresses cross coupling induced instability through inherent decoupling mechanisms, thereby achieving both efficient energy transfer and stable system operation. First, this paper theoretically analyzes the magnetic coupler's decoupling characteristics. Then, this paper builds a mathematical model to analyze load‐independent CC and CV outputs and the zero‐phase‐angle (ZPA) working conditions. Finally, a 180 W experimental prototype with 4 A CC output and 56 V CV output is built to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis.
