A Study on the 2022 Middle School Art Curriculum and Textbooks Grounded in Socially Engaged Art Education Discourse

This study aims to analyze how socially engaged art education is reflected in the 2022 Revised Art Curriculum and middle school art textbooks in Korea, based on a conceptual understanding of socially engaged art education. To achieve this, the study first constructs a theoretical framework for socially engaged art education through a discourse analysis of related literature published in domestic and international journals over the past decade. Based on this framework, it examines how the 2022 revised curriculum and middle school textbooks incorporate the elements of socially engaged art education, and proposes pedagogical strategies for its application in educational settings. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the theoretical discourse on socially engaged art education, which has largely been discussed through practical case studies. By analyzing how socially engaged art education is embedded in the revised curriculum and textbooks, this research seeks to explore practical approaches to implementing socially engaged art education in schools.
