The appearance of new architectural representation in Korean modern architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
This study explores the characteristics of architectural representation in Korean modern architecture during the transition to modernity. For this purpose, this research examines the appearance of new architectural representation in Korean modern architecture in the context of cultural encounters in modernity between the East and the West compared to Western origins of modernism. This work compares not only Eastern and Western modern architectural representation by exploring the relationship between tradition and modernity across cultural differences but also in Korea and China because their cultures have shared ancient philosophies and influenced each other regarding regional modern architecture. Previous studies on the historical transition from the pre-modern to the modern era have primarily focused on physical architecture. However, few have approached architectural drawings as cultural texts or examined the representational convention embedded within them. To fill this gap, the research explores how architectural drawings connect tradition and modernity and how they embody Korean modernity. This study employs phenomenological analysis and comparative study to investigate architectural representations, such as painting and drawing collections and archival materials. It links the origins and characteristics of Korean modern architecture during the transition to modernity with the appearance of new architectural representation.
