Risk Assessment of Natural Gas Engine in Combined Heat Power Plant
This study conducts a risk assessment on key processes gas pressure regulator, gas engine, and gas boiler within a Combined Heat and Power(CHP) system. Which is operated as a decentralized power facility in a chemical plant. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were applide to identify hazards and predict potential accident consequences. The Hazard and Operability(HAZOP) Study was used to identify abnormal operational scenarios, while Consequence Analysis(CA) was performed using the ALOHA version 5.4.7 software to quantitatively evaluate thermal radiation and explosion overpressure impacts. Based on the consequence predictions, the Frequency-Number Curve methodology was applied to assess societal risk acceptability. The number of fatalities was estimated for each scenario, and the accident frequency was determined using the frequency data provided by the Center for Chemical Process Safety. The resulting F-N curves were compared with internationally accepted risk acceptance criteria to evaluate whether the risk levels fall within tolerable regions as well as ALARP regions. This study provides practical data to support process safety management in CHP facilities and offers a framework for assessing societal risks associated with decentralized energy systems in chemical plants.
