Nicaea today? The logic of contextual theology

Much contextual theology is implicitly shaped by what can be described as a postmodern outlook. This way of viewing the world presupposes an incomprehensibility between languages, cultures and historical periods. At a conceptual level, this renders dialogue among them problematic. This article explores the use of an alternative theoretical framework, epistemological particularism, in contextual theology. It then examines the practical application of this methodology by exploring the dialogue between Nicaea and the Akan of Ghana. Contribution: This article aligns well with the scope of HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies as it contributes to a new subdiscipline in epistemology, exploring the conceptual and epistemological dimensions of contextual theology. By adopting a particularist epistemological orientation, the article presents an alternative theoretical framework to the dominant postmodern paradigm that permeates much of contextual theology.
