Enhanced ablation/oxidation resistance of high‐entropy carbides: The role of SiC whiskers

Abstract This study investigates the effect of SiC whiskers (SiC w ) on the ablation/oxidation resistance of high‐entropy carbides (TiZrHfNbTa)C. High‐entropy carbide‐SiC w composites were prepared by powder metallurgy and spark plasma sintering. The ablation resistance was evaluated in an oxyacetylene flame at 2100°C/60 s. It was found that increasing SiC w content significantly improved the ablation resistance, and the dynamic oxidation rate decreased by up to 84% for the sample with 10 wt.% SiC w . This improvement is linked to the formation of a protective interfacial layer, which effectively impedes the ingress of oxygen. Microstructural analysis confirmed a denser oxide layer with reduced porosity with higher SiC w content. These results underline the strategic importance of SiC w for the development of materials resistant to extreme conditions.
