Development of LoRa-based Real-time Truck Location Monitoring and Production Management System for Open-pit Mines
Recently, various wireless sensor network technologies have been proposed to enable long-range communication for Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, including LoRa, which is a wireless communication technology that stably transmits data over several kilometers using low power. In this study, a real-time truck location monitoring and production management application was developed using a LoRa-based IoT system at a communication-limited open-pit mining site. The experimental site was an open-pit tin mine in Mongolia where six dump trucks were equipped with LoRa-based IoT modules. The GPS and beacon data collected from the trucks were transmitted in real time to a central node installed at a high-altitude crushing site, uploaded to a cloud server, and processed by the application. The developed application visualizes real-time truck locations on a map, logs the data, and provides functionality for production management. The proposed system provides a low-cost and efficient solution for smart mining.
